Successful Concluding Conference in Abidjan Rounds Off Sinergia Project

Participants of the Concluding Conference of the SNSF Sinergia Project in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, September 2023

On 13 and 14 September 2023, members of the Sinergia project, the Centre Suisse de Recherches Scientifique en Côte d’Ivoire (CSRS), and a broad range of scholars, health experts, and policy representatives met for the concluding conference on “African Contributions to Global Health” in Abidjan. At the headquarters of the CSRS, the conference participants discussed the project’s core themes, particularly Africa’s role in the production of health-related knowledge, public health policy, and medical innovation.

The two-day concluding conference settled to debate and refine the research results of scholars from diverse disciplines such as architecture, history, public health, urban planning, and health sciences. In a vibrant and stimulating atmosphere, 23 experts from institutions based in Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Ghana, Malawi, Belgium, Switzerland, and the UK discussed issues revolving around the topics of healthcare, space and health infrastructure, drugs and clinical research, local knowledge, research ethics, stakeholder contributions as well as policy and health interventions.

The conference was framed by a keynote by Professor Margaret Gyapong (University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Ghana) on conference day one and a roundtable on the interrelation between science, policy, and society on conference day two. Next to Professor Gyapong, Marie Lisette (Global Forum of the Defence of the Less Privileged (GFDLP), Cameroon), Professor Matthew Harris (Imperial College London, UK), Professor Bassirou Bonfoh (CSRS, Côte d’Ivoire), and Léo Trembley (Swiss embassy in Côte d’Ivoire) contributed to the latter.
